North Ferriby VS Seaham Red Star FC

An inspired substitution by North Ferriby manager Chris Bolder to bring on Danny East for the final 20 minutes led to the midfielder setting up Joel Shortland for the only goal of the game in this pulsating Buildbase FA Vase cup tie replay. Things were close when the sides met back in December when Ferriby won on penalties and just as close at the Dransfield on Saturday.

Both sides were guilty of squandering chances in this game but North Ferriby created more and were certainly rock solid in defence lead by skipper Niall Tilsley. It was a typical cup tie with Seaham certainly playing their part and had as many chances to win it as the home side.

Bolder was pleased with the way his side adapted to the task in hand to gain the victory when he said: “I thought from start to finish we were the better side all over the pitch and considering we haven’t played a competitive game for a long period of time at times I thought our quality was brilliant.”

“It was the will to win and the endeavour from the lads and it was a very pleasing victory as when we do score late on in games it goes to show our fitness levels. We are desperate to win every game of football and for Joel as I though his all round play was outstanding and he capped off a fine display with a goal.”

Defences were definitely on top in the opening exchanges with limited chance for both centre forwards with both Ferriby’s Tom Corner and Seaham’s Andrew Johnson wasteful in front of goal. Both goalkeepers were kept busy especially Seaham’s Andrew Jennison who pulled off a miracle save on 18 minutes from a thunderbolt Jamie Forrester shot.

Man of the match Corner was through on goal six minutes later before being hauled down by Seaham full back Joseph Hailes who was subsequently booked. At the other end Ferriby keeper Jordan Douglas was called into action ten minutes later when he had to punch away from Paul Gardiner’s head.

It ended all square at the break but early in the second half Seaham had a penalty claim waved away by the referee as the visitors thought Levi Tarbotton had handled the ball. Corner then had another chance which fell to him but like two others he sent the ball over the bar.

Just when both sides were checking who would take penalties North Ferriby came up with the winning formula and that man East. He took the ball forward and just when he looked to lose control Shortland took over to fire the ball between Jennison’s legs for what proved to be the winner and a home tie with West Auckland next Saturday.
